This method is most popular due to the fact that a puppy likes a clean comfy bed to sleep on. Crate training consist of placing the puppy in a crate where he has just enough room to turn around in and sleep, this way here he has no room to go potty. If the puppy decided to go potty he would have no choice but to lay it. Puppy's who are crate trained learn how to control their urge to go more quickly than the inside training. This is certainly a plus for new puppy owners.
It si recommended that you establish a routine with your puppy during the crate training process:
- Take the puppy outside to go potty before you put them in the crate and when you take them out of the crate
- Food and water is not to be left in the crate with the puppy. They only need a nice comfy bed to sleep on.
- Provide your puppy a couple of toys to keep them occupied while in the crate (your puppy will be teething so a chew toy such as Nylabone will be great)
- Do not leave the puppy in the crate for more than 4-5 hours
- Put the puppy in the crate at bedtime, when you leave the house or if any time you are in the house and you cannot supervise him
- Get your puppy on a regular feeding schedule. Puppies will need to be taken outside at least an hour after they eat to go potty
As time goes by you will get to know your puppy's personality and the bond between you and him will grow. You will see that eventually you will be able to let your new friend out of his crate more often until he will need it no more.
